But where is the catch? The ZTE Axon 20 5G hides the front camera under its OLED screen, for which the company had to work for the panel differently and thus allow the sensor to become practically invisible, which led it to incorporate a special chip to help you have the pixels that the sensor deserves differently than the traditional one.
This makes you wonder: do selfie camera photos turn out well? Do you see the pixel division below where the camera is under the screen? Keep reading, and I have all the answers.
Giant screen, good quality and special
The ZTE Axon 20 5G has a 6.92-inch OLED screen and a Full HD Plus resolution with a refresh rate of 60 and 90Hz. If you use the phone daily, you will rarely see the sensor under the display; maybe with the panel off, you can see a shadow behind it, even if you look very closely, but nothing bothers you.
If you check the video accompanying this review, you can see that only by placing it at a certain angle is the sensor perceived below the screen. You won’t necessarily notice and get used to it, but you might see that pixels look different in specific images above that part of the display.
This makes it clear that, again, ZTE is ahead – remember the ZTE Axon M, the first folding phone that did not become popular? – and is the first to launch front cameras below the screen, but that does not mean that I have done it the right way or the most invisible way in this case.
The panel has nice colors, and you can configure it to work in either of the two refresh rates.
Cameras
Here is a short answer to this possible question: the ZTE Axon 20 5G has problems with its front camera. Can you take selfies? Yes. Are they decent? Yes. However, the 32-megapixel front camera below the screen delivered inconsistent results in many tests. Here are some results that, as you can see, have strange halos of light, dark tones, or an aspect that could be better.
The rear camera of the ZTE Axon 20 5G, meanwhile, has four sensors:
64 megapixels, f/1.8
8 megapixels, f/2.2, wide angle
2 megapixels, f/2.4, macro
2 megapixels, f/2.4, depth
Photography with bokeh mode.
In tests, lovely bokeh photos were achieved, although sometimes the blurring was not well done, making the image look strange. Portraits with lighting effects look great, and the cell phone also has a night mode that effectively improves this type of photography.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G is the first cell phone for sale with the front camera under the screen, but there are still improvements to be made so that this idea of the Chinese company has a perfect execution. Its price of 500 dollars is competitive, but the value it brings is not high enough to make this investment. Either way, this phone is only sold in Asian markets at the moment.
Proper functioning
This ZTE phone is a mid-range cell phone that incorporates the Snapdragon 765G processor, so it does not compete with the Galaxy S21 family, for example, and it has a much lower price.
In the tests, the mobile had good general behavior; there were no heating problems when playing Asphalt 8 or that the screen was stuck; however, the Spanish translation of its Mi Favor 10.5 interface still has some phrases that remain in English, which makes it clear to me that there is still a little more work to be done in this regard.
The interface, which runs on Android 10, is simple, does not have many frills, and does not include too much bloatware, which is always appreciated in this device.
The phone I tested had 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, although there are versions with 6GB RAM and 256GB storage. The device incorporates the possibility of using a microSD memory but does not have headphones.
The battery is 4,220 mAh and has a 30-watt fast charge that allows you to have a full battery in less than an hour. Its autonomy can be almost all day with the screen set to 90 Hz and a whole day with 60 Hz.
The device has a fingerprint sensor on the screen that worked without significant setbacks in the tests. However, for some reason, the mobile always insisted that facial recognition be activated, which being 2D is not so secure. In addition, it has 5G, but this function was not tested this time.
