An authentic piece of engineering is the Moto Razr 5G, mainly because of its design, although in this element, it also has its penitence. After thinking about it, this is the best idea that can summarize my experience of a few weeks with this innovative cell phone.
I’m not going to lie; it’s a smartphone that immediately catches the eye. Two people, separately, asked me if it was the “new Motorola” while I was opening it. It could be said that this strategy of appealing to nostalgia does work.
Like other reviews, I’ll start by discussing the hardware elements that set the Moto Razr 5G apart. When it is closed, on the front, its redesigned 2.7-inch display stands out —Quick View—, which allows various actions, such as taking a selfie and even making a call without having to open the phone; below this panel is the primary camera, which is accompanied by a flash.
Performance and autonomy
Curious: the best features, in terms of performance, were still reserved for the Moto Edge Plus (Snapdragon 865 and 12 GB of storage). On the other hand, the new Moto Razr comes with the Snapdragon 765G processor and 8 GB of RAM. Its storage is 256 GB, enough to store all kinds of content.
Yes, these features seem enough to have a mobile that responds well to different productivity and entertainment tasks. No perceived delay or pause could interfere with the general user experience.
Moto Razr 5G external screen
The cell phone is also compatible with the 5G network, which incorporates four antennas to offer the best coverage, regardless of whether it is used open or folded. Unfortunately, this technology is not yet enabled in Mexico, where I did the tests with the unit.
Regarding the capacity of its battery, it stays at 2,800 mAh, which can be enough for a full day, according to the manufacturer. In the tests carried out, I did need to charge the cell phone every night, and when I played videos, the need for energy was present from an hour before, in the afternoon.
For the battery to recharge to 100 percent, despite its capacity, it takes about (long) 120 minutes, which is surprising since Motorola indicates that the phone supports fast charging (20 watts).
To preserve autonomy, yes, there is the phone’s external screen, which allows you to carry out more actions with respect to the first folding Moto Razr, such as watching a YouTube video, texting, or making a call. It surprises the functionality that Motorola managed to put in this small touch panel.
Motorola hasn’t stopped including its My UX customization layer on the Moto Razr 5G; however, it is not one of those that are annoying. Nor has it put unnecessary applications, perhaps to give Hello You the prominence it deserves, “an app specially designed for MotoLovers.”
Mobile development allows everything from activating the different gestures to access various functionalities to quickly carrying out a device diagnosis.
The element that has transformed is the camera interface. In most of its phones, the firm had maintained an experience in which the user obtained different recommendations to get the best photo, depending on the environmental conditions.
Now, in the Moto Razr 5G, the interface is more straightforward, but that does not mean that it is not quick to access different configuration parameters, both for still photos and video. The new layout is easy to get used to, so it won’t take long for customers to use 100 percent of the camera’s options.
By the way, the optical section of the smartphone is made up of a primary camera with Quad Pixel technology and visual image stabilization, which also functions as a powerful 48-megapixel selfie camera (when the unit is folded); and an internal 20-megapixel.
Due to its price, the Moto Razr 5G is not a cell phone for everyone, but also because of its design. I indeed love the nostalgic theme implicit in the phone, but sometimes it is not so intuitive to use when it is open, for tasks as simple as writing a message or when you want to watch a video. In other words, it doesn’t feel as comfortable in the hands.
Its external screen is well used for different tasks; in fact, the mobile feels more pleasant to the touch and functional when closed. Let’s say that it meets 100 percent one of the objectives of smartphones of its kind.
Could it have integrated a more advanced processor and a larger battery? Surely yes. However, perhaps its sleek, rugged, slim finish would have been tweaked.
In general, as I said at the beginning, it is an authentic piece of engineering, but also, in its design, it bears its penance.
It is impossible for a current cell phone not to consider the issue of multimedia entertainment for the user to spend at least a few minutes watching a YouTube clip or an episode of a streaming series. This is the case with the Moto Razr 5G since its Flex View screen has a good size to enjoy any content: 6.2 inches. Its resolution is 876 x 2,142 pixels.
The manufacturer has done an excellent job so that the colors are accurate and there is a good level of contrast. The truth is that you could not expect less for the unit’s price, around 1,200 dollars.
Playing content on the Moto Razr 5G
It should be mentioned that when the screen is viewed in an environment reflecting light, it may be possible to distinguish some edges of the layer covering the panel. It also happens that the phone’s body is not comfortable to hold horizontally for long periods since its advantages can become annoying as they are so pronounced.
There is no stereo sound, an element that can perhaps be considered a vital lack, again, due to the cost of the smartphone. Either way, the audio it puts out is powerful and precise.
When reading articles, viewing photos, or browsing different websites in bright environments, the edges of the cover that covers the screen are also appreciated. Come on, nothing serious, but the person interested in this cell phone must consider it.
